da Vinci and da Gypsies

Construct a book with 200 lb coldpress watercolor paper, measuring 12”x18” with deckled pages. Fold each in half. Create the covers with bark paper. Adhere tape to the edges of each page for a border. Apply a light wash of burnt sienna and Payne's Gray to each page. Texture with plastic wrap, paper towels, and bubble wrap. Allow to dry thoroughly. Sew the pages with heavy waxed linen thread. Watercolor images on 90 lb. hot press watercolor paper. Cut out and adhere to the pages. Adhere specialty paper and vellum to the horse pages with matte medium. Braid hemp for a tail. Draw figures and attach papers and a watercolored figure for the minstrel. For the Basilica pages, affix specialty paper with matte medium. Add the picture of the Basilica and then number the pages.


Odysseus’ Journal Pages

Cut cardboard into the shape of journal pages and punch three holes on one side of each page. Collect assorted collage papers and adhere them onto the cardboard pages to achieve a desired Odyssey-themed look. Punch a row of designs at the bottom of the pages with shaped paper punchers. Adhere a contrasting piece of paper on the opposite side of the cardboard.


Travel Journal 1947

Take two pages of Canson 140 pound watercolor paper and glue the long ends together to form a piece that measures 28”x11” and paint with Golden turquoise liquid acrylic paint mixed with walnut crystals to achieve an aged look. Let dry. Make 5 accordian folds, forming 7 pockets that are four inches wide. Fold up the bottom edge three inches to form the bottom of the pockets. Attach eyelets to the top center of each pocket and then secure the ends of the journal with eyelets. Glue postage stamps, charms, tea bag, coin, tickets and tags to the inside of the journal. Photocopy vintage travel postcards and use double stick tape to affix to cardstock, trim and insert into pockets. Add foreign currency, Russian dictionary page, film strip, wrinkled map of the Baltic region, blank vintage postcards to the pockets. String tags through two of the pocket eyelets and stamp with postage stamps (Inkadinkado) and Chinese characters. Attach a cord long enough to tie around the closed journal to the back eyelet. For the cover, computer generate the title text. Lay on top of a trimmed piece of copper and emboss the letters. Turn over the copper tag and press the letters from the reverse side to form raised letters. Age with brown dye ink (Rubber Stampede). Paste vintage photo to the cover.


Wild West Journal 1897

Cut a piece of embossed wallpaper to into a 15½x9½ piece. Paint embossed side with cinnamon acrylic paint. When dry, brush raised portion with Golden copper acrylic paint. Paint inside of the journal with the copper paint. When dry, turn 2 1/4½ of the wallpaper from the bottom to form a pocket. Secure ends with eyelets. In addition, insert eyelets at the middle folds 3-1/2½ from the top to thread the closing cord.

First pocket: From Wild West books, photocopy or scan reward poster, glue to card stock and then glue to the inside cover to give the cover some stiffness. Photocopy the 1897 Wabash Railroad schedule, wrinkle, and then smudge with Venetian Sunset Fresco Chalk-Finish dye ink. Brush the raised wrinkles with Tuscan Earth Fresco Chalk-Finish Dye Ink. Smudge a small envelope with Rubber Stampede brown dye ink and Tuscan Earth Fresco Chalk-Finish dye ink. Attach a postage stamp. Reduce photocopies of railroad posters and schedules and age them with brown dye ink (Rubber Stampede) and Tuscan Earth Fresco Chalk-Finish dye ink and insert into the envelope. Place in the front pocket.

Second pocket: Stamp beige tags (Stampington & Co.; Rubber Stampede; The Heritage Collection; Stampers Anonymous; Postmodern Design; Eclectic; Inkadinkado; Stamp Francisco) and smudge with red dye ink (Rubber Stampede) and Tuscan Earth Fresco Chalk Finish dye ink. Thread Funky Fibers through the holes and attach charms and beads.

Third pocket: Photocopy and reduce book cover and newspaper. Smudge all pieces with Rubber Stampede brown and red dye ink and Tuscan Earth Fresco Chalk- Finish dye ink. Transfer photo of Calamity Jane onto beige cardstock. Stamp Numbers (Postmodern Design) and name. Apply Fragile Crackle. Deckle trim the photo transfer and glue to another piece of cardstock. Photocopy Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid’s photos and rap sheets.

Cover: Computer generate title and print on brown vellum. Tape to beige cardstock with vellum tape. Attach eyelets to each corner and glue to cover with E6000 glue. Computer generate date and print on beige cardstock. Place behind metal tag and glue to cover with E6000 glue. Smudge both pieces with Rubber Stampede brown ink.
