by Melissa Manley-Daniels
Wilmington, NC

Somerset Studio - Jul/Aug 02

Melissa requested permission and downloaded Rose O’Neale Greenhow’s letters. She photocopied, coffee-stained, and glued them onto the box. She reduced a copy of charcoal rubbing of Rose’s gravestone. She tinted the copy with paint and glued it to the front doors of the outer box. Melissa also adhered Rose’s letter and an engraving of ruined Charleston on the front.
She gathered ephemera such as a reproduction of Confederate money, North Carolina Succession Ordinance, etc. She coffee-stained or washed with acrylic paint as needed and glued them to the box.
Close-ups of the front and back.

Melissa pasted old roses paper into a cigar box using dark acrylic paint and stamped handwriting (Just for Fun). A fashion gate was made out of steel fencing wire and painted with black Krylon. She dabbed the gate with rust colored acrylic. She drilled holes in the cigar box to accommodate the fence. Melissa also constructed a large outer box with doors out of Foamcore board and papiér machéd this together with the inner cigar box fitted inside. She glued Rose’s encrypted letter to the inside of the box. She painted with two different acrylic glazes mixed with matte medium and dried between coats.
Melissa arranged a photo of Rose and her daughter, fabric, Spanish moss, and dried roses inside. She glued as needed and sewed imitation coins into fabric at the bottom.
Melissa glued images of the "Battle of Opequan at Winchester, Virginia" onto the inside of the doors with the engraving, glazed peach giftwrap, and Rose’s writing.
Melissa glued fabric below the interior box. She also painted wooden wheels and glued the bun wheels to the bottom of the box.
She also glued beaded fringe to the inside top.
