Exciting Challenges for Art Quilting Studio & GreenCraft Magazine
#1: Around the Quilting Block :: The Handbag
Many of us who've been around the quilting block know how fun and exciting it is to make a quilt top ... and more thrilling than a gigantic quilt top is the smaller singular quilt block. But when it comes to actually quilting and binding, that's another story. A lot of us would rather get a root canal than quilt and bind our quilt tops! (There is a similar phenomenon with knitters and gauges ... but that's another story.) An artist recently shared with me that a while back, per the challenges issued by a local quilt shop, she and a group of women made quilt top after quilt top ... with complete delight. A most memorable challenge was to look inside their handbags to find inspiration to create a quilt block. So when I looked inside my handbag recently, I saw my trusty black Cross pen onto which I had tied a red ribbon. And as you can see, the pen was a great source for inspiration to create a small quilt block.

#2: Art Quilting Studio :: Art Quilt Walking
In the November/December issue of Belle Armoire, you’ll be seeing this amazing T-shirt by artist Ruth Rae where essentially, she has made an art quilt that she sewed onto a plain white tee.
The title of her article will be Art Quilt Walking, and with it, a Call for Creativity will be issued not only for readers of Belle Armoire but also Art Quilting Studio. Here’s the challenge: make an art quilt and incorporate it onto a piece of clothing or other wearable (like handbags, hair accessories, belts, brooches, shoes, etc.) and send it to us as we consider it for publication in either Belle Armoire or Art Quilting Studio.

#3 Art Quilting Studio :: Quilt Tops Found
If you're like me, you run across MANY vintage quilt tops at flea markets. Turns out that we're not the only generation that loves the quilt top. Our ancestors did too ... as evidenced by vintage quilt tops that seem to outnumber vintage quilts. What you see here was once a vintage quilt top but it became repurposed into an apron! How adorable is that?
And look at how easy the apron is. Just a quilt top of squares turned a quarter of a turn with rickrack stitched at the edges and a sash added at the top. So here's the challenge ... in all of its variations:

Variation #1 With a vintage quilt top, create something new and utilitarian. An apron, a duvet for an art journal, a sleeve for a love letter, a cone for a gift presentation.
Variation #2 Become inspired by a vintage quilt top and create a new top with new fabrics and then make it into something utilitarian.
Variation #3 Sometimes, you will run across vintage quilts or vintage quilt segments that are screaming to be cut up and transformed into something new ... like a handbag, a toaster cover, or presentation cones and envelopes.

#4: Art Quilting Studio :: The Good Quilt
Prior to being a magazine editor and after being a social worker, I worked for two years as the Director of Community Relations for El Sol charter school in a very needy part of downtown Santa Ana ... a school that serves an underprivileged population. When artist Cynthia Shaffer heard that I needed help to organize a fund-raising dinner called Solar Expressions, she offered her support. And one of the first things she created is a quilt that became the focal point of the event.
It was an event that inspired an ARMY of volunteers to gather as we erected tents ... decorated tables, made name tags, secured catering, secured entertainment, and raised some serious money to help the school. It was a night when attendees were convinced that through good-faith efforts, magic could happen ... and support raised for a most deserving and needy population. Do you have a story about a quilt or quilts that help? We’d love to hear from you.

#5: GreenCraft Magazine
With Claudine Helmuth’s new line of products in hand, I had a really fun day of Green–Crafting. What is Green–Crafting you ask? In short, it is repurposing "discards" into way cool art and crafting projects. For this project, I started with an empty toilet paper roll to solve a gift-giving dilemma ... a smallish gift I wanted to give to a friend that needed a bit of something special in terms of presentation. I took an empty roll and first applied a layer of gesso by Claudine Hellmuth for Ranger. Next, I used the closed end of my Burt's Bees lip balm to create polka dots with "dash of red."
I'm so excited to announce that Somerset Studio will release a brand new publication in September 2009 titled ... you guessed it: GreenCraft Magazine. It will feature projects that aren't just Green, but Green-Chic. Because I know deep inside we want to find ways to marry GREEN with STYLE. And that's EXACTLY what we'll do in this publication!
