Here are the instructions for the self-portraits featured in the summer 2004 issue of Legacy:

Lorraine Al-Rawi—San Pedro, CA
Adhere a stamped background onto cardboard. Cut out a horse shape. Attach decorated ribbon and beads. Affix photo, crown and wings.

Sabra Brown Steinsiek—Albuquerque, NM
Spray Scotch 3-M Spray Mount on cardstock. Adhere face-down onto a piece of red velvet paper. Dry under weight overnight. Stamp the prepared velvet paper with a leaf background and gold gem Rubber Stampede pigment ink. Print a digitally manipulated picture onto cardstock. Trim. Cut gold cardstock slightly larger than the picture. Mount the prepared pieces together and to the base with Thermoweb Peel N Stick double-sided adhesive. Add beaded ruff and cuffs by applying adhesive and glass beads. Add Marquise gold Diamond Dots (Stampendous) to the crown and as a border at the bottom of the portrait. Attach a Mary Engelbreit sticker, quill pen and letter stickers.

Wrap a piece of cardboard with a glossy book illustration of a painting. Cut out a line from a sheet of music. Adhere to the prepared background. Attach a color copy of a self-portrait. Glue computer generated words (Courier New font) with a Uhu glue stick. Mount the entire piece onto a larger piece of script paper.

Mount a piece of copper mesh onto a tea-stained matboard. Decorate with lace, corners and buttons. Mount a circle cut photo with a larger oval piece of wine velvet paper. Attach wings. Adhere the prepared piece to a larger brown cardstock panel.

Paint a piece of matboard with Golden Acrylic Medium mixed with Liquitex Interference Red. Adhere handmade paper, found papers, photocopies, Page Pebbles on top of sticker letters, and acrylic rhinestones. Embellish with a metallic gold ink pen and metallic inks. Seal with Deco Art Triple Thick Gloss Glaze.

Susan M. Sek—Reading, PA
Cut bookboard to size. Adhere decorative papers and snippets from magazines with a glue stick. Trim a found picture and glue onto a tag. Using the direct-to-paper technique, color a second tag. Heat set. Stamp Italian script (Hero Arts) on the tag. Glue cut-out photo of self onto decorative papers. Place a self adhesive frame (K & Co) over the top of the photo to frame the face. Affix the tags together with an eyelet. Glue the prepared tags to the top left corner. Rub along the edges of the picture with a gold pad. Stamp pen collage (source not given) on brown cardstock. Cut out and glue to the collage over the photo to look like a gate. Glue a rose (Art Accents) and found phrases. Apply butterfly stickers around the picture. Add color around the edges with brown and gold ink pads.

Adhere a blue cardstock panel over a wooden rectangle base with glue. Affix screws into each corner. Wrap artistic wire around three screws. Attach hinge charms (Upon a Charm) with glue on the right side. Computer-generate photo, convert to black and white, and print on vellum. Print an identical photo on paper. Place underneath the vellum to give the effect of two images. Stamp OCD using an alphabet set (Artistic Stamps with Panache) on a larger vellum panel. Paint ribbon. Glue along two edges of the panel. Mount flower and a painted hand.

Tammy Kushnir—Philadelphia, PA
Adhere a blue cardstock panel over a wooden rectangle base with glue. Computer-generate photo, convert to black and white, and print on vellum. Print an identical photo on paper. Place underneath the vellum to give the effect of two images. Stamp OCD using an alphabet set (Artistic Stamps with Panache) on a larger vellum panel. Paint ribbon. Glue along the edges of the panel. Adhere two eyelets upside down to the meeting corners of the ribbon. Attach a painted hand charm and a frame with a computer-generated text.

Diana Twedt—Rudyard, MT
Wrap 4½x5½ foamboard with orange tissue. Wrap 3-1/4½x4-1/4½ foamboard with periwinkle tissue. Center and mount the periwinkle board to the orange board. Seal with acrylic medium. Dry-brush with ivory, copper, tangerine, and blue lagoon acrylic paint. Cut out photocopy of image. Mount to chipboard. Trim to fit and seal. Add collage papers to the background. Embellish with paint, wire, beads, and polyshrink tiles.

Collage several pieces of paper with a color copy of a photograph. Add punched-out vellum flowers and centers. Add kimono-like paper cut out to the photograph. Mount on a slightly larger black panel.

Lois K. Grisel—Vermilion, OH
Layer background paper onto a black panel. Affix with eyelets. Stamp border image. Computer-generate text with light brown ink. Burn the edges. Glue to the background. Mount three photographs, each successively with another layer of foam tape.

Sherri Campershioli—Broadview Heights, OH
Prepare cardboard by painting with Lumiere metallic paints. Adhere found papers and color photograph. Cover a gingko leaf with Mod Podge. When dry, paint the gingko leaf with the Lumiere paints. Glue over abaca. Affix found items and words clipped from a book. Mount mulberry tissue as a hat using double-stick tape. Affix double-stick tape to the sides. Press clear tiny beads onto the tape.

Color a glossy cardstock panel. Using black ink and masking technique, stamp crone halo, spider web, roses, open book, fly, and a falling figure. Mount onto a larger dark blue panel. Punch holes in the bottom. Attach fibers.

Melissa Woolsey—New Orleans, LA
Cover a 4½x5½ piece of matboard with hydrangea-decorated paper. Stamp wings (Atomic Icons) on white vellum. Glue iridescent wrapping paper over the wings. Glue wings in place. Cut out a copy of a photograph. Adhere to the base. Stamp crown (The Stampsmith) on vellum. Cut out and attach as shown. Trim the edges with yellow rick rack. Glue flowers. Stamp quote (Zettiology) on yellow cardstock. Glue to purple vellum. Adhere to white cardstock. Glue to the base.

Isn’t Life Grand?
Stephanie Cauley—Gelsmar, LA
Glue a digitally altered photograph onto joss paper. Stabilize with a cardstock backing. Embellish with metallic lace, dress trim, and jewelry findings. Tint the photo with chalks. Emboss doll’s eyes with colored pigment ink and embossing powder. Heat to melt the powder. Glue to the base. Stamp words with an alphabet set (PSX). Color the edges of the panel with pigment inks and metallic rub-ons.

Metamorphosis
Nicky Ruxton—Mountain View, CA
Splatter sheet music with gold paint. Tear and glue to a background. Attach torn specialty lace paper, picture of clock, open weave wire, and crinkled and painted copper paper. Affix an eyelet on one bottom corner. Attach a torn glassine envelope at an angle. Glue measuring tape paper to the bottom of the envelope. Insert trimmed photograph. Adhere embossed and cut-out flies in a random fashion.

Paint a large slide mount with mustard yellow craft acrylic paint and Golden Glaze. Insert photograph and decorate with papers and pens. Write on the slide. Attach small brads through the slide to the panel.

Janice Kerr—Chatham, NJ
Cover matboard with torn papers, ribbon, trimmed paper, metallic thread, and photograph. Embellish with beads, buttons, wire, and eyelash fibers.

Jacqueline Pearce—Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Paint a background scene. Trim a black and white photocopy. Glue to the painting. Draw glowing light from the figure. Stamp two birds. Cut out birds and stars from painted text papers. Adhere with a trimmed orange panel onto a larger yellow panel.

Take a black and white self portrait. Print and glue onto silver paper that has been adhered to matboard. Glue additional silver paper pieces to the photo.
