Cover Artist Somerset Holidays & Celebrations Autumn 2008
Sophann Schleifer Scottsdale, Arizona

For our 2008 issue of Somerset Holidays & Celebrations we feature a medley cover – which means we get to show off the creations of three fantastic artists! Choosing images for a cover often involves a lot of thought, taking in consideration color schemes and a good representation of different holidays — and of course eye-catching artwork! “Wicked,” the bewitching shadow box, was created by Jacki Jameson. “Noel,” the sweet dimensional Christmas decoration, was fashioned by Sophann Schleifer; and Heather Mellstrom created the precious “Love Notes” letter holder. Read on and get to know a little more about the artists behind the artwork.

Q: How does it feel to be a cover artist?

I was so psyched when I saw my piece on the cover of Somerset Holidays & Celebrations. I e–mailed my friends right away to share my news. I was thrilled to be selected to be in the magazine so you can imagine how I felt when I saw the cover. I am so happy.

Q: What advice would you give to an artist intimidated to submit artwork?

I was hesitant to submit a piece because of that fear of rejection. I would advise artists to submit their work. Having a piece rejected does happen but don't take it personally. Go for it. There is nothing to lose. Even if your piece doesn't make it, the process might help you look at your work differently and you might even grow in the process.

Q: What is your favorite holiday?

I love to make decorations for the holidays, particularly Christmas. Firstly, because I have a whole year to plan for it. It's also fun, year after year, to unpack the decorations and see them anew. Christmas decorations can be so ornate – lots of reasons to use glue, glitter, pretty papers, snow, fibers; just about everything.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

I have horses and sometimes like to do cowgirl–themed pieces with western–themed paper and stamps. However, I am very unfocused. Today you will find me knitting a funky purse. My craft room tabletop right now is covered with fabrics, sewing machine, yarns, paper supplies, glues, a calligraphy book, stamps and magazines. I love to create something from a group of supplies and turn it into a finished project I'm proud of. I get inspired and then go to the supplies. I'm kind of a “jack of all trades but master of none,” but I do have fun. I have always done some sort of creative process. I learned to sew when I was 10 and enjoyed that first rush of adrenaline, which I still enjoy every time I enter a shop filled with goodies just waiting for me to turn them into something new.

Q: Where do you get most of your artistic inspiration?

I read lots of magazines. Stampington & Company is really the leader because they are so current with trends. I also go to fairs, shops, and take lessons to see what is new and then translate it into how I see the process; how I can make it “mine.” The creative process is a very big part of my life and always will be.
