The Shore Cliff collection from Christine Adolph is inspired by the beaches near her home, and reflects her definitive collage style combining sketches of natural seaside elements infused with romantic textures from antique ephemera.
In describing her source of inspiration, Christine says, "So much of my artwork is reflective of my surroundings. I have lived steps from the ocean my entire life. My home is filled with nature's treasures, and many of these treasures are from my coastal backyard. We take ocean and shore cliff walks and never come home empty handed. There is always a leaf or shell that makes its way back and is added to the collection. Each rock, shell or dried pod brings back memories of shared family time and is more precious than any collectable I could buy.
Many of the shells that I used for the Shore Cliff collection are from vacations and evoke memories of the exotic places that we have gone to for surfing trips and family vacations. Each shell has interesting stories of how and where they were collected or purchased. I love to paint and draw real objects so I can study their intricacies up close, feel their texture, and evaluate their changes with the changes in the light and shadow. Naturally, when it comes time to paint or collage, either by hand or in the computer, I use the inspiration that surrounds me in my home; shells, dried flowers, pods, as well as my collections of vintage letters, passports and postage.
One of the reasons I was so drawn to the mixed media crowd, through Somerset Studio®, is that I connected with them and their ability to transform often discarded elements and objects into beautiful works of art. They are so resourceful about subject matter and often times use what they have gathered, collected, and have displayed in their home, or they use their environments in their art, also. Whether we are using nature or old ephemera, as artists, we can find a never-ending treasury of inspiration right under our nose to study, draw, and interpret in our own way. This methodology of using what we are surrounded by is an interesting topic, don't you think? I can imagine someone that lives in a busy city designing rubberstamps gaining inspiration from manhole covers and reflections from skyscraper windows."
