Doll Artist Profile – Charla Khanna
by Rice Freeman Zachery
“By the time I was 7 years old, I knew I was going to be an artist,” says Charla Khanna, an extraordinary doll artist residing in New Mexico. “Some people are born with clever fingers, but they could do something else. I had no choice. I really am driven to make things.”
Cover Story!
The Enchanted Pond Priestess

Several talented artists come together to make a beautiful statement with polymer clay and cloth: The Enchanted Pond Priestess (yes, she’s a frog!). “For inspiration,” says sculptor Rosie Rojas, “I used an old book of fairy tales I’ve had since childhood … I came upon a Russian fairy tale entitled ‘The Frog Princess.’ I had found my model!”
Wish Upon a Star: Fairy Wands
If you’re looking for a little magic in your life, Diana Twedt’s Fairy Wands should do the trick. Create a bit of “artistic magic” yourself with Foamcore board, dowels, scraps of paper, and a dash of serendipity.
TAODA’s Storybook Doll Exhibit
The Texas Association of Original Doll Artists (TAODA) shares dolls from the Storybook Doll Exhibit, in which each participating artist made a figure to replicate in three dimensions the images of characters found in popular children’s literature. We are in awe of the talented artists who submitted their dolls to us.
Junkyard Fairies
The “Visual Sound” group gathers around an art-doll project with member Dottie Jazemski as instructor. Her advice? “Trust me. They will become what they want to be and they will also name themselves and give you their stories.”
An Art for the Soul Doll
“Most of the women in my life, who have all been very precious to me,” says artist Jackie Hull, “have a very sweet soul, inside and out. This doll is a tribute to my mother and to all women everywhere who strive to be a blessing to those they love, in all the roles they play.”
Carolyn’s Menagerie
She adores animals, and she has a keen eye for detailed construction and embellishment. Meet Carrie Murtha, artist and imaginative storyteller who shares her love for animal characters through the medium of dollmaking.
