The Summer 2004 issue of Art Doll Quarterly has rolled off the press and is available on newsstands now! Inside, you’ll find:
Doll Artist Profile – Lia Zulalian
by Ricë Freeman Zachery
Lia Zulalian became entranced by dolls at a very early age. Her obsession grew with her, encouraged by a nurturing upbringing. Today the artist’s intricately detailed dolls are exquisitely adorned with tiny birds, flowers, bells and teacups, all painstakingly hand crafted from fine porcelain. The array of such finely detailed miniatures is nothing short of breathtaking.
Ancient Spirits: Michelle Marquette’s Sculptural Figures
Michelle Marquette has many special “relatives,” which she created herself. They come from several unique clans that she created to showcase a growing collection of antique ethnic fabric pieces, and give expression to her own personal emotional reality. Michelle’s “relatives” are marvelous figurative wall sculptures.
Art Doll Challenge: Altered Bendi Dolls
We’re issuing another art-doll challenge! This time we’ve chosen altered Bendi dolls as a starting point for your next adventure in dollmaking. We encourage you to paint, decorate, stamp, bead, and embellish a pre made doll to your heart’s content, fashioning a figure (or several!) that reflects your personality. Multiple submissions are welcome, but we must receive your submission(s) no later than December 13, 2004.
Responding to the Challenge: Flower Children
In the premier issue of Art Doll Quarterly, we issued a challenge to our readers to create handmade dolls with an original theme: Flower Children. We asked you to fashion an art doll\ with gardens, posies, plants or other natural themes in mind. The response has been remarkable: We have received nearly 100 art dolls made with a garden theme, and continue receiving them well past the deadline. In the summer issue, we’ve selected a variety of our favorite flower children to showcase for your enjoyment.
The Colors of Summer
The author offers a variety of tips and techniques for hand-dyeing mohair, silk and trims for your next dollmaking adventure!
Michele Schaefer-Parr’s Ancient Healer
“In my artwork,” says the author, “I’m influenced by the simple beauty and rhythm of form and color found in nature. And my imagination is stimulated by the customs and ceremonies of ancient cultures.” Michele Schaefer-Parr takes us on a journey of discovery as she shows how to safely use nature-made materials in your next doll. Follow along as she describes the evolution of Ancient Healer, her 15½ mixed-media art doll interpretation of a spirit-guide healer of the early Woodland People.
Draw Your Own Dolls
Can’t draw? Doesn’t matter—you really can draw your own dolls, using the tips and techniques offered by artist Sherrill Kahn. And if you still feel that you can’t draw your own doll, she provides two original doll patterns in this issue for your enjoyment. Feel free to photocopy them, enlarging or reducing as needed, for your own private use.
